Hybrid bikes are the most common bikes sold for urban use, but there are 3 different variations of hybrids.
Upright
Comfy style upright hybrids, typically starting at about $350 these bikes may have a suspension fork, nice wide seat and a very upright riding position which give a very controlled but slow ride. These bikes also run an intermediate tire that is neither too wide nor too aggressive (knobby). Not recommended for long distances or technical trails, a great first bike or for a returning rider who’s a little uneasy on a bike. A perfect bike for some light commuting and slow leisurely bike tours.
Sport
Sport hybrids, are faster both because of tire + rim selection as well as geometry and wheel base. What that means is that these bikes are hybrids of hybrids in that they’re more like road bike and can go much faster with less effort due to their frame length (wheelbase) and because the geometry being quicker it creates a quicker handling bike which can dart left/right much faster. The ride quality is a bit more exciting at high speeds. Be prepared to start to keep up with much faster looking bikes but don’t expect to overtake (Joe Racer Boy) but definitely a fun bike.
Flat bar road bikes
This is the greatest hybrid of all times in that in can do a little bit of everything. The roots of this bike lay in road racing bikes. The riding position is the most aggressive of the three but it can be modified to be more upright and comfortable. These bikes are built to do one thing as they sit on the showroom floor in their stock mode, they’re designed to go fast, accelerate quickly, and handle like a sports car. They do however have a trick up their sleeves in that they can (most of them) accept wider tires which softens the ride a bit but doesn’t dull the sensation of speed. An awesome choice for someone who wants one bike to do multiple jobs, kind of a Swiss Army knife of bicycles.
